A resource is a aid for gaining knowledge and support. Having good language resources available not only helps in the learning process but they can also broaden your perspective and open up avenues that would not have otherwise occurred to you. The key to a good resource is that it be readily and easily accessible and the Internet does exactly that.
First let’s look at online media:

Even though we are in a cyber age let’s not forget that physical books are always a great language resource. The British company Hodder Education has been in the business of publishing self help type books called Teach Yourself since 1938. The language series of Teach Yourself books before 1973 were hardcover books and stressed grammar. They provide courses for 60 languages so you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. In 1974 they changed to soft cover books and put the focus more on conversational language. In addition to books, Hodder Education also provides courses in other types of media such as Cd’s, multimedia and cassettes.
Another well known self help foreign language book company is called Assimil. They are a French company that was started in 1929. They have a different approach which involves learning by both reading and listening. The courses are broken down into several series and you choose the one that is most relevant for you. This includes a basics series, business series, travel, children and even a slang series just to mention a few.
